Frequently Asked Questions

We answer your questions before your adventure

For the classic Inca Trail, we recommend booking at least 6 to 8 months in advance, as government permits sell out quickly. For alternative adventure routes such as the Salkantay Trek, Choquequirao, or the Ausangate trek, it is ideal to book 2 to 3 months in advance. If you are looking for day tours in Cusco (such as the Sacred Valley or City Tour), a couple of weeks is usually enough, but booking in advance guarantees your spot and a better organized itinerary with Trails to Machu Picchu.

The best time for hiking in the Peruvian Andes (including Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain) is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. Days are usually sunny with clear views, although nights are cold. If your Peru package includes tours to the Amazon rainforest (Manu or Tambopata), this same dry season is ideal, as there is less rain, trails are more accessible, and wildlife observation is exceptional.

Our hikes to Machu Picchu and expeditions in the region vary in difficulty. Routes like Salkantay and the Inca Trail are moderate to challenging, requiring good cardiovascular health and endurance to walk several hours a day. Treks like Choquequirao or Ausangate are more demanding due to steep slopes and altitude. We always recommend prior cardiovascular training and arriving in Cusco a couple of days early to properly acclimatize.

The city of Cusco is located at over 3,300 meters above sea level. To avoid altitude sickness (soroche), we suggest resting on the first day, staying hydrated, and drinking the traditional coca tea. It is highly recommended to schedule lower-altitude tours at the beginning of your trip, such as our City Tour in Cusco or a visit to the Sacred Valley, before undertaking higher and more demanding routes like Humantay Lagoon or Rainbow Mountain.

Cusco offers incredible landscapes beyond the traditional route! If permits for the Inca Trail are sold out, at Trails to Machu Picchu we have excellent alternatives. The Salkantay Trek is famous for its stunning glacier and cloud forest scenery. Another great option is the Inca Jungle, which combines cycling and hiking, or shorter and more exclusive routes that also culminate with a visit to the Inca citadel.

Yes, absolutely. At Trails to Machu Picchu we are experts in creating tailor-made Peru packages. You can design an itinerary that begins with cultural immersion in the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, and continues with an ecotourism expedition into the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest, either in the Tambopata National Reserve or Manu National Park. Contact us and we will create the perfect adventure for you.

Our goal is for you to enjoy your trip without worries. Most of our Machu Picchu packages and multi-day hikes include private transportation, professional bilingual guides, entrance tickets (including Machu Picchu), high-quality camping equipment, and full meals during the trek. For day tours in Cusco or the jungle, inclusion details vary, so we invite you to check the “Includes / Not Included” tab on each specific tour page.
