Our Sandoval Lake Tour program in Peru is designed to offer you an experience of the captivating beauty of the Peruvian Amazon in a short time. Known locally as Lago Sandoval, this is a must-visit destination within the Tambopata National Reserve.

Sandoval Lake has great biodiversity. Unlike the Madre de Dios River, the waters of the lake are clear and calm, making it an ideal habitat for many species. During the visit you may observe hoatzins, families of giant river otters, black caimans, as well as different species of birds and butterflies.

This two-day trip is not only about enjoying the tranquility of the nature surrounding Sandoval Lake. You will also have the opportunity to experience activities such as a canopy walk and zip line.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Canopy Walk

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our team will welcome you at the airport or bus terminal and transfer you to our office. Here we will provide a brief introduction to the team that will accompany you during the tour.

You will also be able to safely leave your belongings in our office while you are on the tour. Once ready, we will transfer you to the dock to begin the boat journey along the Madre de Dios River for approximately one hour until reaching the ecolodge.

The lodge staff will give you a warm welcome with a local drink as a welcome beverage. After check-in, lunch will be served, consisting of a typical Amazonian meal.

Then we will begin the Sandoval Lake tour with a boat trip to Monkey Island. Here you can observe a wide variety of monkeys such as spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and other species.

Afterward we will take a walk along the canopy walk, which offers an impressive view of the Tambopata National Reserve from the treetops. Once the activity is finished, we will return to the lodge for dinner.

After dinner we will take a short night walk to observe caimans and black caimans.

Day 2: Tambopata – Sandoval Lake – Puerto Maldonado

At dawn we will visit the parakeet and parrot clay lick. Here these birds consume clay rich in mineral salts that helps them metabolize and neutralize toxins they may have ingested from fruits and seeds.

Our local guide will share more information about this interesting behavior. After visiting the parrot clay lick, we will return to the lodge for breakfast.

After breakfast we will walk approximately three kilometers crossing the Madre de Dios River until reaching Sandoval Lake. Here you will be able to observe the great biodiversity of the area, including different animals and birds.

We will then take a boat ride to get even closer to the wildlife of the lake.

Later we will make a stop for lunch in the reserve area. After lunch we will return to the lodge.

At approximately 4:00 PM we will take the boat back to Puerto Maldonado. Our team will meet you at the dock to transfer you to the city center and later to the airport or bus terminal.
