Day 01 – Cusco to Waqrapukara Trek and Return
Discover Waqrapukara Fortress.
Your adventure begins bright and early with a 4:00 AM pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We’ll drive for two hours to the town of Cusipata, where you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel your day. Continuing our journey, we’ll border the shimmering Pomacanchi Lagoon, the second largest in the Cusco region, offering picturesque views of pastures and agricultural fields. After approximately 1.5 hours on an unpaved road, admiring the evolving scenery, we’ll reach the town of Santa Lucía. A final 30-minute drive will take us to the hike’s starting point.
The trekking portion begins with a 1.5-hour ascent, treating you to magnificent views of the Apurímac Canyon, one of Peru’s deepest, with dramatic cliffs all around. We’ll pause at the Waqrapukara viewpoint for rest and photos of the impressive fortress emerging on the canyon’s edge. Next, we’ll ascend a rocky path towards the site, marveling at the Apurímac River flowing below. You’ll have about 1.5 hours to explore the archaeological site, climbing through ancient temple remains and capturing spectacular photos of its famous horned-shaped rock formation and the vast canyon.
Waqrapukara boasts enigmatic pre-Inca and Inca constructions, intricate terraces, and a rich history, making it a perfect place to learn about ancient Andean culture. After soaking in the breathtaking views and historical insights, the group will begin the 1.5-hour hike back to our private transport. We will then drive you back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:00 PM.
